Piketon Redstreaks upset Paint Valley 13-12

Bainbridge, Ohio- On Friday I made another drive to Paint Valley to battle with S.V.C. for Piketon. Coming into the game, Pait Valley was (6-0) and PIKETON (3-3). Calpreps had the home team favored by 18 points. For those not familiar with Calpreps, they hit about 80% of their games nationwide, doing every 11-man game in the nation.

The Bearcats started this one with a bang when Preston Fauber dropped a ball into the hands of Jimmy Cain, who caught the ball in stride and then outraced his nearest defender for a 63-yard touchdown. The Redstreaks easily defended a two-point conversion to keep this a 6-0 game just forty-eight seconds into the game.

The Redstreaks would go to the air, where Luke Guillon found Mason Thacker for a 16-yard gain. From there, the Redstreaks would show that they could also run the ball, with Gullion racing for 18 yards, then it was Buddy Wilson sprinting for 18 yards. With 0:13 left in the quarter and the Redstreaks facing a fourth and eight, they elected to go for it where Gullion was plowed down well short of the first down marker by Cam Cooper.

Fauber would scramble around, buying time for a receiver to get open as he continued to look downfield. He finally threw the ball to Braylon Robinson for a gain of 25 yards, with 10:47 left in the half.

Later in the half, the two teams traded sacks. For the Redstreaks, #88 (not on the roster) would get the sack, and for the Bearcats, it was CJ Manion.

With 5:01 left in the half, Wilson flashed some breakaway speed andgianed 31 yards. The drive came to a close when the Bearcats held on fourth down again; this time Logan Hamlin stopped Gullion.

The next time the Redstreaks got the ball back, Gullion found Wilson for 29 yards, and a horseback tackle was called on the Bearcats, adding 15 additional yards after the play. Gullion ended the drive with a touchdown pass to Wyatt Savage. The conversion kick from #13 (not on the roster) gave the Redstreaks the 7-6 lead, with 0:44 left in the half.

The half came to a close with Fauber being sacked by Nathan Shrun, Evan Showmaker, and #88.

The Redstreaks would go up 13-6 on a 59-yard touchdown run by Wilson, who powered through two tackles then outran the Bearcats defense with 11:38 left in the third quarter.

Fauber would move the chains with a nice run, then back that up with a 19-yard run to keep the Bearcats offense rolling. The Bearcats looked as though they were going to score, but a Braylon Robinson fumble was pounced on by the Redstreaks on their own 9-yard line, keeping this a 13-6 game.

Robinson would atone for the fumble when he powered his was to an 8-yard touchdown. He would miss the conversion kick, keeping the score 13-12. This was the second time the Bearcats failed to convert after a touchdown.

Gullion would find a wide-open Jayce Johnson for a gain of twenty-seven with 2:29 left in the quarter. The Redstreaks would again be stopped on fourth down when the Bearcats defensive line stuffed Gullion short of the first down marker.

James Annon, who had a very solid game for the Bearcats, would sack Gullion for a loss of eight with 9:41 left in the game. Later in the final frame, with 5:30 left, Annon would sack Gullion again. The Bearcats would miss a field goal as the special teams unit continues to struggle in this one and to make matters worse for the home team. Fauber would be hurt and leave the game for a short time. When he came back, he did not have the same mobility as he had earlier in the game. He tried to run the ball when he could not find a receiver open, and he seemed to slip down when he was unable to make a cut. With 3:14 left in the game, he would be sacked by Shrum when he tried to scramble after he could not find a receiver open.

With 1:59 left, the Bearcats would see their special teams have their biggest mistake when their punt returner fumbled the ball as he tried to catch it, and when the pile cleared, the Redstreaks had the ball when they were able to run the clock out, securing the 13-12 win.
