Thursday night I made the Tip City to catch the big Miami Valley match-up between Butler and Tippecanoe. The Aviators entered 5-0, while Butler came in with a 4-1 record. During one of my interviews with a Red Divls player, I was informed that this game was circled on their schedule since the loss last season. I happened to be in the right place to hear a Butler player say after tonight, "We can call this our second home."
The Red Devils defense made a statement early when Max Deckard picked off the pass thrown by Mason Reckner early in the game. The Aviators defense would stand tall and get the ball back to its offense a short time later.
After getting the ball back, Reckner completed a 19-yard ball to Allen Mabson II, who made a nice grab after the ball was tipped. After that, the Red Devils offense turned the Butler offense blue as they were quick to get the ball back to their offensive unit.
Tippecanoe would go on a slow 12-play, 38-yard drive that ended with a 20-yard field goal from Owen Baileys, making this a 3-0 game with 6:45 left on the opening quarter clock.
Reckner was stopped for a yard loss by Collin Isaac, with 5:15 showing on the clock. Recner would find Braylen Crump for 21 yards. The same combo struck again for the last big play of the quarter, this time for 40 yards. Crump, a 6-2, 170-pound senior, is slick and very dangerous after catching the ball.
The drive would come to an abrupt end when Recner was picked off by Drew Husic in the end zone, where he returned it out to the 21-yard line. The ensuing drive netted minus three yards as the Butler defense again found a way to stand tall.
Cade Fraizer stopped Kaiden Bates for a loss of five, but the Aviators was able to shake that off by getting a 15-yard touchdown pass from Reckner to Logan Butera, folowed by the conversion fick from Zach Foster, to make this a 7-3 game with 7:34 left in the half. The drive went for seven plays totaling fifty-six yards.
The Red Devils would need just two plays to retake the lead, with Larkin Thomas finding Jackson Davis for the 55-yard touchdown to make this a 9-7 game with 6:44 left in the half.
The Tippecanoe defense struck again when a tipped ball was picked off by Dylan Herdon with 4:11 left in the half. The Red Devils defense seemed to be in the right place at the right time almost the entire game.
On the ensuing drive, Thomas found Herdon for 20 yards. Thomas made a nice little cut to pick up additional yards. Thomas used his feet to pick up 35 yards on a nicely run play. Xavier Melton ended the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run to make this a 16-7 game. The drive went for 71 yards, taking six plays.
Asack on Reckner by Max Howard helped get the Aviators offense off the field a short time later. After getting the ball back, Cade Havill made a sweet twisting-turning catch for 20 yards to help set up a 21-yard field goal by Baileys, making this a 19-7 game.
The third quarter would bring a 12-yard run by Thomas to give the Red Devils a first and goal at the Butler three. Anthony McFarland would pounce on a Red Devils fumble to keep this a 19-7 game with 4:00 left in the quarter. The next big play would come with 1:29 showing on the clock and come when Riley Seibert got to Butera for a loss of three. Seibert had to have double-digits in tackles as his name seemed to come across the PA System time and time again. The biggest play in the quarter came from Tippecanoe when Thomas found Davis for the 59-yard touchdown to make this a 25-7 game.
The final frame was scoreless but did bring a 6 yard sack on Recner by Ethan Couch.
