Bedford Bearcats bombard Akron Buchtel with defense in 14-7 win

Akron, Ohio: Yesterday afternoon, Akron Buchtel hosted Bedford in a game where both teams really needed the win. Heading into this one, Buchtel was on a three-game losing streak, limping in at 1-30. Bedford came in with a 1-2 record and would for the 2nd week in a row using a wide receiver at quarterback. I was told at the game the starting quarterback was not playing offense because he broke a team role but would still be on defense. The backup quarterback, according to the roster provided to me at the game, for reasons unknown to the public, was not getting the start.

The opening quarter was owned by the Bedford Bearcats. Defensively, Terrence Brown Jr. would tip a Buchtel pass, forcing a fourth and seven and a punt. Then, after Daurean Johnson muffed a punt, the Bearcats Jemes Warren pounced on it. The only score of the quarter came on a 46-yard run by wide receiver turned quarterback Kent Staten to put the Bearcats 7-0 lead, with 5:05 showing on the clock.

Buchtel would wake up in the 2nd quarter with Stevie Diamond sprinting for 22 yards out of the quarterback slot. A short time later, Diamond would close out the 37-yard, 7-play drive with a 3-yard run. Xaiver Wilson botted the point after a kick over the crossbar, putting the Griffs up 7-6 with 9:33 left in the half.

Staten was sacked by the trio of Demetrice Coates, Wilson, and Jeremiah Manuel for a loss of seven; the Griffs offense would be able to get back on the field a short time later.

Diamond threw a pass in the direction of Karter Dawson, who after making the catch twisted and turned his was to a 29-yard gain. The Bedofrd defense would end the drive when Dsani Donaldson did his best Ray Griffin impression by picking off the Diamond pass with 4:54 left in the half.

On the ensuing drive, Staten busted free for a 14-yard run. Then, Jay Jay Hudson, who looked like a man playing against boys at times, ran for 13 yards. He then capped the drive off with a 1-yard power run for the score. Staten would find Terell Pollard all along to convert the two-point conversion, putting the Bearcats up 14-6 with 2:57 showing on the clock.

Hudson broke off a 23-yard run just 0:18 seconds into the 2nd half. The drive would end four plays later without any points being scored. The Bedford defense would come out on the Buchtel ensuing drive and get a nice play from Brown Jr. and Randal Rosario, who threw Marcus Britt Jr. down for a loss of two. Then Tyland Murphy sacked Diamond for a 9-yard loss. With 2:36 left in the quarter, Diamond would be picked off by Staen, who looked very good from his defensive back slot.

Hudson broke off a 12-yard gut run, showing Superman power on the run. Hudson would taste defeat the next time he got his number called when Evander Hargrove threw him down for a loss of two with 1:26 left on the clock. Hudson, as a good player, will shake off the loss with a run of 30 yards on a third and twenty-second situation for the last big play of the quarter.

The final frame would not provide any points, but there were some nice plays. First, we had a bad snap, causing Staten to take a 7-yard sack by Arman Gable. Then Hudson ran for 17 yards, backed up by a 20-yard run. The kid can falter out of play. What he might lack in flat-out speed, he makes up with field vision. Staten would use his feet to pick up 14 yards, with 4:44 left.
