Note: Props to Myles Hutchinson from Grove City for setting this interview up.

Name: Anthony Whatley

School: Central Crossing

Positions played: Running back and linebacker

Graduating year: 2025

Height and weight: 206 5’10

Who and/or what got you started playing football?

I used to play football with my dad when I was young, and I have been hooked ever since.

How long have you played football, along with the reasons you continue to play?

I have been playing football since I was 4, and the reason I still play is because I love the game. I love competing, whether on the gridiron, basketball court, or just in life. I always find a way to win!

Would you rather kick the season off against your rival or play them in the final week of the season?

I would rather play them in the final week of the season because it’s a do-or-die moment for getting to the playoffs. Our rival is always Week 10, and this year it could be my last high school football game ever and a moment I will never forget. It will be bittersweet, for sure.

Would you share with everyone any camps that you have attended, along with the biggest things you are learning?

I have been to Wheeling University, Ohio Wesleyan University, Ohio Dominican, Valparaiso, and Ball State University. The biggest thing that I’ve learned is that your GPA matters, and it plays a big part for universities. Of course, all coaches want to win, but the school I pick will want me to win on the field and in the classroom. Football is a stepping stone for a few years, and when I graduate, I’ll be well prepared for anything life throws at me.

What is the toughest part of a Central Crossing practice?

The competition amongst ourselves and how everyone wants to get better. The conditioning is relentless, and the coaches push us to get better. Personally, I eat that stuff up. Push me; it’s only making me faster and stronger!

Who is the toughest teammate to square up against at practice?

The toughest teammate to square up at practice is myself because of the standards that I hold myself to. I want to win or find a way to win.

RB or LB, which one do you feel you are best at?

I feel like I'm better at running back. I can catch the ball, run the ball, and make big blocks for a teammate all in one set of downs. I like mixing it up!

What is the toughest part of your game?

I can see holes and hit them hard, and if my team needs a first down, I’m the guy to get it for them.

What makes you a good teammate?

I’d say my leadership and making my teammates better. If I’m putting in the work, they will follow.

What has been the highlight of your football career so far?

My first touchdown my sophomore year was against Westland High School.

Focusing only on the road games that you have played in, which stadium has had the best overall atmosphere?Explain

When we played at Massillon High School, the stadium was beautiful, and their crowd was always packed. I love that place.

Do you feel that private schools have any advantages over public schools?

Yes, because they can get access to resources that public schools can’t. It’s weird that big D1 and D2 schools are cheaper but harder to get on the team, while smaller D3/NAIA/JUCO schools are easier to make the team but tuition is higher.

What is your go-to snack?

Sour skittles and a Gatorade. Sometimes I put skittles in my Gatorade!

Who are your role models?

My mom and my dad.

What scares you?

Aliens. For real.
