(Semi-Pro)West Virginia Leviathan 41 Ohio Legends 0

Last Saturday, I drove over to the Ohio School for the Deaf to watch my second semi-pro football game. The game pitted the Ohio Legends against West Virginia. Leviathan. While watching the two teams warm up, it looked to me like a game that would post spped against power, with Leviathan having the power and Ohio the speed.

(Note: Derrick Villarico from the Leviathan team supplied me with the names of his teammates. (I relied on the roster from tpfl.org. for the Legends players.)

In the opening quarter, a bad snap would cost Leviathan ten yards when Jermell Corbitt had to scramble to get the ball before the Legends had a chance to recover it. Corbitt would suffer a sack when Van Pope planted him in the grass.

The quarter would see Corbitt get picked off by Chris Rhynehardt. When Ohio got on the field, they would not be long in turning the ball over when Anthony Snyder coughed it up, and West Virginia came away with the rock.

The last big play of the opening quarter came in the form of a 22-yard sprint from Seth Davis. The quarter would end tied at zero, with both defenses flexing their muscles throughout.

The first break in the second quarter came when Akeem Mitchell was back to punt with the snap low as he fielded it; his knee touched down on his own 3-yard line. Davis used some nice work from his hogs up front to take the ball into the end zone, giving the road dogs a 6-0 lead. Montgomery Rebelo was true on the point after the kick to increase the lead to 7-0.

The Ohio defense got a break on a bad snap to West Virginia quarterback Ryan LaAsmar, resulting in an 11-yard loss. This became a 14-0 game when Davis sprinted in from 20 yards out. Davis looked like he was enjoying himself, and he appeared to be getting stronger as the game grew older.

The third quarter would bring two more scores from West Virginia. The first one was on a kickoff by the Leviathan and picked up by Daminn Cunningham, who walked into the end zone. The final score came on a 1-yard run by Davis to make this a 28-0 game.

The Legends would get a pick by Daniel Hagwood in the final frame, as the defense for the most part was still playing hard. West Virginia would recover a fumble, with Lequan Rhodes coming out of the pile with the ball. A 7-yard touchdown pass from LaAsmar to Desmond “Bubba” Cunningham made this a 34-0 game. The final touchdown in this one came on a 50-yard pick-up by D’Andre Hollaway.

For those of you that have never taken part in a semi-pro game, I recommend it, but I will say to you that these men work most of their full-time jobs or go to school, and they still try to find time for practice and games.
