What is the best part of being a student-athlete at Nitro High School?

The amount of student-athlete support and help is sure.

What is the toughest part of being a student-athlete?

Keeping up with work in class.

What are your personal goals for the 2024 season?

I want 20+ tfls and 100+ tackles.

What is the strongest part of your game?

Probably my tackling, zone coverage, and my ability to watch a film, break it down, and call out the opponent's plays.

Which part of your game must you improve on to be a better player?

Probably man coverage 

Have you gone to any camps so far? If so, which camps, and what were the things you learned at the camps?

I have gone to one camp, and I learned that coaches are very serious about your grades.

Who is the toughest player to face off against in practice?

Eli Littlejohn, for sure.

What is the toughest part of a niro practice?

Probably the conditioning challenges.

What has been your biggest moment as an athlete?

Probably having 17 tackles against the #2 team in AA.

Do you play any other sports for Nitro? If so, which ones?

I haven't yet, but I plan on playing baseball.

Which game are you looking forward to the most this season? Why?

Probably the Hoover game week 3 because we get to play them at home.

Where should the West Virginia State Finals be held?

Laidley Field: 100%

Have you ever gone to a Wheeling Nailers hockey game?

No

What is your go-to snack?

Probably chips and cheese from Rio Grande in Nitro WV.

Who is your favorite athlete?

My favorite athlete is either Jason Kelce or Travis Kelce.

Carson Neely, Port Allegany  Looking back from day one as a coach up to the present, what have been the low and high points of your coaching career? 2020 was a rough first year. We had maybe 15 kids on the roster in preseason sometime in late June. We ended up with probably 6 starters who had never played football in their lives, which isn’t exactly a recipe for success! I was also ejected from our game against Cowanesque Valley. We lost to DuBois 49-0 to end the difficult season... The future did not look so bright. - But fast forward to 2022, where we won our first playoff game 62-6. Followed that up with a win against the reigning western finals champion, Redbank Valley, in a 7-3 fist fight to advance to the D9 championship. In 2023, we won an overtime thriller against DuBois Area 14–13, avenging a 1-point loss at the 1-yard line the year prior.

Small school football

  As the 2024 football season approaches, I want to say thank you to all of the players, coaches, cheerleaders, band members, officials, and all of the school staff for the good times you are about to give thousands of fans this year. As a fan and a person who covers games, I often get asked why I go to as many smaller school games as I do, and I always tell those asking that there is something special about driving into a small town or village and seeing signs wishing the team well. The crowds might not be as large as the bigger school games, but to a certain extent, they are more into it. I believe that is because almost everyone knows everyone, and it is really a community by itself. The players put their pads on the same as the players at the bigger schools, and they, as with the bigger schools, give it their all as much as they can.
