2024 Interview with Paint Valley Bearcats Head Coach Corey Dye

Note: Paint Valley has long been one of my favorite teams in the state to root for, and they have one of the best stadiums in their area, if not the state. This is one of the places I highly recommend taking a game.

Name: Corey Dye

Position: Head Football Coach

School: Paint Valley Local

What will you most remember from the 2024 class?

I will remember how hard that class worked for our program. We lost a valuable player for us when we lost Dom Chambers early in the summer at a football camp. That was a major blow for our program. Dom had so much talent!! Our seniors did a nice job of leading our team after Dom got injured. We couldn’t have had the level of success that we had without them stepping up the way that they did. I am very proud of them for that.

Can you share with everyone the players from the 2024 class that are moving on to play college ball, along with the school they will attend?

Dom Chambers is going to Wittenberg University to play football.

Peyron Bell is also going to play at Wittenberg in the fall.

Gavin Kingery is playing at Muskingum University.

I am very proud of all three of them!!

What was the best part of the 2023 season?

Although we fell a little short of our goals for the season, we made a lot of special memories together!

What concerns do you have as the 2024 season gets closer?

We have very little time to prepare for the season. The summer months go by so fast! This is why every minute we have together is extremely important!

What is the best part of coaching high school football and Paint Valley?

The rich tradition that Paint Valley Football has here makes it so special. I love this community, and I love the kids here!! There is no better facility and scenery to play a game, IMO.

What is the toughest part of coaching high school football?

Sacrificing time away from your family.

If you could change one thing about Ohio High School football, what would it be?

Playoff Regional Breakup. It makes no sense for our region to travel over 3 hours to play a playoff game!

What is the toughest type of team to prepare for?

A team that has a lot of speed!! Speed Kills!!!

The Bearcats posted another winning season, going 8-4 in 2023. What will it take for the 2024 team to not only better that record but also make a deep playoff run?

We have to put in the work this offseason. We will continue to work hard in the weight room and on the field this summer. Our kids have shown some really impressive strength gains. Being the smallest school in the league presents a lot of challenges for us. We have to get young kids ready to play so that we can have solid depth. We have found that out the hard way the last couple of seasons with huge injuries. This year is a whole new season, so we can’t be satisfied with last year's record. We have a huge goal to win the SVC this year, but we have to put in the work. If we can accomplish that, then we will have a chance to set ourselves up for the playoffs.

How much time in practice is dedicated to the kicking game?

We work hard at the kicking game. We try to spend about ⅓ of our practice time devoted to special teams. Special teams can win and lose games for you. Unfortunately, it cost us a win last year. This season, we will work a lot harder at being more proficient in every special team unit that we have.

What do you look for when trying to schedule non-league games?

I am always looking for teams that will challenge us so that it will prepare us for the SVC and playoffs.

As the head coach, what do you do to help your players get invited to all-star games?

I am a member of the Ohio Football Coaches Association. I reach out to the coaches who get selected to coach and send them films of our athletes. I have always thought that it would be cool to have an all-SVC senior game vs. another local conference. I think it would be a huge hit!

Have you watched any of the UFL games?

Yes! I have watched several games and enjoyed them. I love how you can hear the coaches and players communicate with one another.

What is the one sport you cannot watch on TV?

Ping Pong
