What were your goals entering the 2023 season, and were you able to achieve those goals? 

I achieved most of my goals. I was selected All-Conference and selected Defensive POY by my teammates. Team goals fell short. I wanted to get to the playoffs, but that just makes me hungry for next season. 

What were the high and low points of the 2023 season?

The biggest low for me was the loss that eliminated us from the playoffs. The high point came with our team's first win. I felt like we were clicking. 

Which road game did you like the least during the 2023 season, and why did you dislike it so much?

Hopkinsville because I felt we could have played much better. 

What are the best and worst parts of playing high school football?

The best part is the teammates and friendships. I also love the competition and off-season grind. I’m not sure there is a bad part to playing football. 

What do you believe is your strongest talent as a football player?

My motor! I don’t take plays off. Effort and attitude are never an issue. 

What do you feel you have to improve on the most before taking the field this season?

I’ve gained 25 pounds and lots of strength since the season. I don’t think I’m slow, but I’d like to improve my speed. I’ve been working to improve in this area. I also plan to be a leader for my teammates. I was team captain as a sophomore and hope to be a more vocal leader my junior season.

What have you been doing to help you become a better player?

I’ve spent lots of time in the weight room and started track in February. I’ve also been attending a weekly leadership meeting with my coach to improve in that area as well. 

You are listed as a running back and a linebacker. Which position do you feel you are better at? Explain

I feel I’m a better LB. I do a great job reading my keys and love the position. 

Of the two positions (running back and linebacker), which one is the hardest for you to prepare for? Explain

Probably LB because of all the film studies. I watch offense films too, but I love the process of trying to know what my opponent is going to do based on their formation. In some cases, they tell the story based on which foot is back or where their eyes are pre-snap. 

Who was the best player you faced last season, along with the team he played for?

Kayden Custard is from Harrison Country.

What is the worst type of weather for you to play in?

In 7th grade, I played in an all-star game, and it was windy, sleeting, and snowing. It was fun, but awful at the same time! 

Where should the state finals be held?

Kroger Field

What is the one food that you refuse to eat?

Turnip Greens

What is your favorite class or subject?

History is my favorite subject. Math is my favorite class because I love my teacher. 

What scares you?

I never want to let my teammates or family down. I don’t do it often because the thought of it scares me. I never want to be that guy.

  Braylon Sturgill Ironton High School LB/FB 2025 What were your goals entering the 2023 season, and were you able to achieve those goals? Our goal every year is simple: win a state championship. We fell short last season, but we are coming back stronger. My personal goals were to be a full-time starter and contribute to my team's success.
