All-Star Game: Muskingum Valley 34 Licking County 15

  • I want to thank the people from Licking Heights for the program that included the rosters.*

Last night I made the drive to Hornet Field, home of the Licking Heights Hornets, to watch the 43rd Annual Licking County vs. Muskingum Valley all-star game.

Facing a fourth and eight on their first drive, Muskingum Valley would go for it and make that decision right with a 43-yard pass completion from Max Lyall (Tri-Valley) to a wide-open Bentley Hanson (New Lexington). With 7:22 showing on the clock, Jaydan Wallace (Tri-Valley) waltzed into the end zone with a 2-yard run. Matt Harper (Maysville) was true to his point after kick to make this a 7-0 game. The drive went for 68 yards on 9 plays. Lyall ended the quarter with a 16-yard pass to Evan Anderson (Sheirdan).

Just .51 seconds into the second quarter, Muskingum Valley would score again. Isaiah Stephens (New Lexington) found Hanson wide open once again as the Licking County secondary looked like they had never played the game before for a 25-yard field goal, making this a 13-0 game. Lke Conaway (Licking Valley) blocked the point after the kick.

Anderson easily picked off a bad throw by Licking County quarterback Beckett Long (Granville) with 8:30 left in the half. Stephens would cough the ball up, but luck was on Muskingum Valley's side, with the ball bouncing right to Anderson, who galloped for a gain of 18 yards, with 8:10 left in the half. After Wallace caught a little swing pass, he had the boom laid on him by Kam Wakler (Licking Valley), but a flag on Licking County took that away and moved the ball closer to the goal line for Muskingum County, with 7:52 showing on the clock. The catch of the game came on a one-handed grab by Nicholas Finley (New Lexington) for a 9-yard gain. This became a 20-0 game when Stephens connected with Henson, who leaped high into the air for the 25-yard touchdown catch.

The Dave Burnworth co-hit of the game came with 5:54 left in the half when Carson Kellogg (New Lexington) made like Jack Tatum and annihilated Jack Yeager (Granville), who managed to hang onto the ball and pick up 7 yards. Long would be sacked by Jack Robinette (Sheridan) with a little help from Canon Mercer (Zanesville) for a loss of 5 yards, with 4:37 left in the half. Long would cough the ball up with 3:03 left on the clock, but luck was on the side of Licking County as Aaron Amour (Licking Heights) pounced on the ball. Long would be sacked again by Chris Gargasz, but a face-masking call went against Muskingum County, negating the sack and giving Licking County a nice gain on the play. Long would throw into tight double coverage. Making the easy pick for Muskingum Valley was Kellogg.

Muskingum Valley used a 23-yard run from Carter Winland (West Muskingum) to help set up a touchdown pass by Lyall to Finley, making this a 27-0 game, with 7:37 left in the third. Long would find Kevin Dunlap (Heath) for a 46-yard gain at the 5:52 mark. Long then put Licking County on the scoreboard with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Connor Corbett (Heath). A two-point run by quarterback Sam Marasek made this a 27-8 game, with 4:22 left in the third. Licking County would get a pick six from Joe Day (Granville) to make this a 27-15 game, with 4:08 showing on the clock. Muskingum Valley went 64 yards on 8 plays, capped off by a 10-yard gut run from Wallace to make this a 34-15 game, with 0.08 seconds left in the third.

There were three plays of not in the final frame. First, Long was sacked again, this time by William Dodd (Morgan) for a loss of 10 yards. All game long, both of the lines for Muskingum Valley were dominating. as they seemed fired up to play this all-star game. Long would find Auggie Conley (Licking Valley) for a 20-yard gain on fourth and ten. Talon Preston (Philo) would deliver the Dave Burnworth co-hit of the game when he blew up Trent Markus (Licking Valley) for a loss of five after the catch was made.
