Two late scores lifts Watterson to state title win 19-14 over Toledo Central Catholic

CANTON, Ohio - Before 4,410 fans, Watterson and Toledo Central Catholic put on a hard-hitting battle for the Division 3 state title. The two teams know each other very well, as they have faced each other in this very game just last year. Central Catholic prevailed 27-7.

In this rematch, when all was said and done, Watterson would take the trophy with a hard-earned 19-14 win. Both teams showed enough offense to keep those in attendance interested just enough to anticipate the big play and a ton of defense that brought several nice plays. Leading the Waterson defense with 9 tackles apiece were Ben Gabrich, Ben Uhlenhake, and Joe Hayes. Galbrich is the only senior in that group, as the other two are just sophomores. Uhlenhake also had the only pick in the game. Hayes broke up two passes, and he blocked a pass. For the Fighting Irish, leading the way on defense were Michael Besteda (11 tackles) and Isaiah Seller (10 tackles).

Central Catholic would cap off an 8-play, 52-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead. The score came on a 4-yard run from quarterback Ali Beydoun. The PAT from Blake Moody was true. Tyler Morgan did the bulk of the work on the drive, carrying the ball four times for 32 yards.

The second quarter was scoreless as both defenses stood tall when they had to while the offenses were held to almost nothing. The biggest gain in the quarter was a 15-yard pass interference penalty. There were a total of six first downs in the quarter with 118 total yards. Central Catholic had 97 of those yards.

Watterson found their offense in the third quarter, starting with Zack Weber moving the chains, taking three runs to pick up 11 yards. He went for 10 yards on two runs to keep things moving slowly in the right direction. Quarterback Drew Bellisari used his feet to pick up 17 yards. From there Weber went for a 6-yard run, then he capped off the 10-play, 90-yard run with a sweet 28-yard run. After Greyson Conyers was true on his PAT, we had a 7-7 game, with a little over a minute left in the quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, Jeremiah Fuller did his best. Cordarrelle Patterson impressed by taking the ball 86 yards for the score to make this a 14-7 game. Fuller was fast and made the return look as easy as Patterson did when he returned nine kickoffs for touchdowns during his NFL career.

Weber picked up 15 yards on two runs to get the Watterson ensuing drive going. The drive continued into the final frame, where Bellisari ended it with a short pass to Dominic Theado, who raced 52 yards for the score, making this a 14-13 game with 10:28 left in the game.

With a little over 7:00 minutes left in the game, Watterson would begin what turned out to be the winning drive. Weber needed three carries to pick up 12 yards as nothing was coming easy for the offense. Bellisari used his legs to pick up 13 yards. Dominic Theado grabbed a pass for a big gain of 18 yards to keep Uncle Mo on the side of the offense. Weber picked up 13 yards on two runs, and then the game-winning score came on a 9-yard Bellisari run to make the score 19-14.
