Marion Local runs win streak to 64 with 74-0 state title win over Hillsdale
Marion Local was back home at Tom Benson Stadium looking for another state championship trophy. They have won 14 state titles overall and have played in a total of 22 State Semi Finals games. They have the longest winning streak in the nation, sitting at 63 entering this game. For Hillsdale this was their first state title game. They have played in just one semifinal game also.
Before getting into the game, I first want to say Marion Local should be the blueprint for every small school in Ohio. The thing I like best about them is you never hear their fans cry about playing private schools, bigger schools, or schools from outside of their area, and the times I have watched them play, they, in my eyes, have always played with class and respect to the teams they are beating up on. They simply line up and play, usually beating whomever the schedule puts them up against.
The game was another dream start for the Flyers and another nightmare for their opponent, this time the Falcons from Hillsdale High School.
The Flers would explode for 33 points in the opening quarter. Their scoring drives would total just 16 plays covering 155 yards. They capitalized on every opportunity they were given, making everything but PAT kicks look easy.
Scoring in the quarter were Parker Hess on runs of 4 and 3 yards.
Victor Hoelscher on a 37-yard reception and a 66-yard punt return.
Ethan Heitkamp on a 1-yard run.
The Flyers lit up the scoreboard four times in the second quarter.
Scoring went like this.
Hess scored on a 1-yard run. and a 3-yard run. This drive totaled 5 plays and 66 yards.
Griffin Bruns on a pick six covering 45 yards.
Justin Knouff on a 60-yard run.
With the second half being played under the running clock rule, Marion Local was still able to add two scores. The first one came on a Heitkamp 12-yard run and a 5-yard run from Kamden Eifert.
Hillsdale was beat early, but from the press box view, I was fortunate enough to have thanks to the O.H.S.A.A. staff; they never quit on their coach or their fans. They simply were out manned by a team whose seniors have never lost a high school game and have won four state titles.
