Avon Eagles ground and pound their way to state total win over Anderson 20-13
Canton, Ohio—On a cold, windy, and snowy night, Cincinnati Anderson and Avon set out to do battle for the Ohio High School Division Two State Final football game. The crowd of 4,911 fans might have been small but loud, and they stayed until the end of what turned out to be a very competitive game.
Avon opened up things with two runs from Tyler Kaufmann, picking up 9 yards. There were two more runs on the drive, with Kaufmann adding another 4 yards to his tally sheet. Quarterback Nolan Good added 7 yards. The 6-play, 87-yard drive ended on a 71-yard run by Good, followed by the PAT off of the foot of Owen Warrick to give us a 7-0 game, with 8:16 left on the opening quarter clock.
Anderson would get 24 yards on runs from quarterback Justice Burnam, but the drive overall would total 26 yards and result in zero points.
The Raptors offense was back on the field with 9:55 left in the half and the snow and wind still falling and blowing hard. Burnam once again used his feet to pick up 20 yards on 4 carries sandwiched around a false start penalty. Burnam would have a pass broken up by Ryan Stolarski, but pass interference was called on the play, giving the Raptors 15 more yards. Durrell Turner picked up 10 yards on a couple of carries to help set up the 12-yard touchdown pass from Burnam to Aiden McClanahan with the PAT from Lucas Callahan to lock the game up at seven with 6:08 left in the half.
The Eagles would start their next drive at their own 43-yard line after a 7-yard return by Grant Barr. Cam Windell opened the drive up with a 7-yard run. Good would end the 6-play, 57-yard drive with a touchdown pass to Matt Maxey, making this a 14-7 game with 2:58 left in the cold first half.
Burnam would cough the ball up on the next Raptors drive, and making the recovery for Avon was James Tatman, with a little under 2:00 left on the clock.
Good would look to have a 25-yard gain on the ensuing drive, but he too put the ball on the turf, caused by Jayonn Saunders at the 5-yard line, with the result being a touchback. The turnover fest would continue when Burnam was picked off by Jacob Graham. Warrick attempted a 37-yard field goal only to have it blocked by Brady Kuhn to end the half.
Burnam got things started for Anderson in the third quarter with a 4-yard pass to Trace Jallick; he then used his feet to pick up 11 yards. Later on the drive, Burnam hit Jake Brammer for 18 yards. A 13-yard pass to Caden Piening put the ball on the 43-yard line. A 30-yard run from Turner helped set up the next Raptors score that came on a 6-yard Burnam run. Jakob Weatherspoon blocked the PAT to preserve the Eagles lead 14-13.
Avon would respond with a 13-play, 87-yard drive to score what turned out to be the winning points. All 87 yards came on the ground with Quiante Smith picking up 25 of those yards, including the 10-yard touchdown to make the score 20-13 with the two-point conversion run by Good being stopped.
The Raptors would not go away without a fight; their ensuing drive would see the offense go 16 plays, picking up 67 yards, but they failed to score. The highlight of the drive, which took off 5:29 off of the clock, was Burnman picking up 35 yards, with a 15-yard run being the biggest of the three. In all, he picked up 35 yards on the drive.
Anderson had one drive left in them with 4:28 left on the clock, and again they would move the ball, picking up 75 yards on 19 plays, but again failed to score. The drive ended when Aiden Atkins batted down a pass, causing pandemonium on the Avon sideline as players and coaches celebrated along with their fans.
