Miami East comebacks to beat Springfield Northwestern 21-20

I used the rosters that were on both of the league websites.

Springfield, Ohio- Thursday night I made my second trip to Northwestern High School to catch a football game, though this was the first time I would be seeing the home team, as the last time I was there was a neutral site game between Delphos Jefferson and Paint Valley.

Northwestern would convert a fourth and one with power running Preston Allen easily moved the chains. Later on the drive, Luke Fissel was able to haul in a 10-yard catch with Ried Smith doing the throwing. Smith on the roster is listed as a wide receiver. Facing another fourth down, Northwestern was able to convert with Smith hooked up with Mason McDermott for the 30-yard touchdown. Xander Stacey was true on his point after kick to make this a 7-0 game, with 6:44 left in the quarter. The drive lasted for 11 plays while totaling 70 yards.

The Warriors defense came up big at the 6:00 mark when Tyler Romine got to KJ Gustin for a short loss at the 6:00 mark of the quarter. The quarter would end with Gustin finding Vincent Crane for 18 yards. Crane is listed at 6-4,255, and he could have had a record-setting night if the ball was thrown his way.

With 7:25 left in the half, the Warriors were facing a third and seven. McDermott was able to catch the pass and pick up another first down. Smith used his feet to convert a fourth and five with a 10-yard gain. Smith found pay dirt with an 18-yard scamper to make this a 14-0 game with 3:00 left in the half. The drive totaled 15 plays and went for 73 yards.

The Vikings seem to wake up on the ensuing drive, where they went 7 plays, 63 yards for the score. Garrett Fine made a leaping catch in double coverage for the 28-yard touchdown. Caleb Staley hit his point after kick to make this a 14-7 game with 1:11 left in the half.

Before the half ended, Fissel would make a nice catch for 20 yards.

Mixing short passes and runs, the Vikings worked the ball down to the Warriors 3-yard line; from there, Aaron Mills scored, and with the point after the kick again, we had a 14-14 game.

The rest of the quarter would go by quickly, with each team making a big play. For the Warriors would convert a third and ten when Miles Estes picked up 12 yards with a catch. For the Vikings, Kaden Francis hauled in a 43-yard catch.

Each team scored a touchdown in the final frame. For the Vikings, Lincoln Littlejohn made a 5-yard touchdown catch, and the point-after-kick made this a 21-14 game. The Warriors would score one one-yard run by Allen. On the point after the kick Cameron Mingee was forced to run when he failed to get the sanp down, and making the game-saving tackle was Caleb Staley. Earlier in the half, Tyler Romine returned a kickoff for a touchdown, but a holding call on the return took the score off of the board for the Warriors.
