2024 will be a huge year for you as a sophomore. You will be leading the Buckeye Trail offense. Have you prepared this off-season any differently than you have in past seasons? Explain

In the off-season, I’ve been very focused on improving my skills and physical fitness. I put in a lot of work in the weight room, sometimes more than once a day. I have a quarterback coach and a group of great guys in Canton that I travel to work out with regularly. Locally, I work with my physical therapist, Matt at One Body, on speed training and technique.
I also train a few times a week with my trainer, Pete, at the Cambridge Wellness Co-op.
I really focus on my diet and protein consumption. I’m excited to see the results on the field.

What are your goals entering the 2024 season?

My goal entering the 2024 season is to lead my football team to win the IVC and make it to the playoffs.

What were your emotions as you entered the Newcomerstown game?

Going into that game, I was a mix of nerves and excitement. As a freshman, I wasn’t given many opportunities to start, so when I finally got my chance, I felt a huge amount of pressure to prove myself. I was determined to show that I was ready both mentally and physically.

When I started making those passes and then ran for that touchdown, it was like everything fell into place. Scoring that winning touchdown felt unreal. All the hard work and patience paid off. That game was a turning point for me, proving to everyone that I could handle the pressure and lead our team. After the game in the locker room, Coach Kerns was super pumped, and one of the seniors gave me the game ball, which had never happened before.

What lessons did you learn about yourself last season that you can use this season to be a better player and teammate?

Last season taught me a lot about toughness and determination. As a freshman, not starting initially taught me patience and the importance of always being ready. When I finally got the chance to play in challenging conditions, I learned that I could handle pressure and succeed, even when the odds seemed against me. I hated waiting for my turn, but this experience showed me that staying focused and hard work pay off.

What have you been able to accomplish during the off-season that will help you be a better quarterback in 2024?

During the off-season, I’ve made gains physically and mentally. I have gotten stronger, faster, and improved my arm accuracy. Working with Matt at One Body focused on improving my technique and also increasing my agility and responsiveness on the field. My sessions in Canton with QB coach Jim Ballard have greatly improved my passing accuracy and decision-making under pressure.

What is your favorite part of practice?

Installing new plays and learning more

What is the worst part of two-a-days?

I really like practice, but I guess conditioning when it is super hot is the worst.

What do you believe is the strongest part of your game?

Being a dual-threat quarterback

Which game are you looking forward to the most this season?

Week one against Caldwell

How long have you played football, and who or what got you playing?

I have played since first grade, so it has been 10 years. I always liked football. Every Sunday we had family dinner. We would play football in the yard with my cousins, uncles, dad, and brother.

Where should the state finals be held?

The Football Hall of Fame in Canton

Who is the one teammate who is sure to do something funny to get a laugh when things are a little tense?

Jace Hickman

What is your favorite type of music?

Rock 90s to 2000s rock

If you could go back and live in any time in history, where are you living?

If I could go back in time, I’d go to the 1980s to see Mike Tyson in his prime. It would be so cool to watch him become the youngest heavyweight champ ever and dominate. Plus, it would be cool to hang out with my dad.

What is your go-to snack?

Protein Bar
