BACF All-Star game: Ohio 9 West Virginia 7
On Friday night, I made my way to St. Marys, West Virginia, to cover the 29th annual BACF All-Star football game between Ohio and West Virginia. Defense would rule the nest in this one, as both teams took turns hitting each other's offense hard all game long.
At the 10:25 mark of the opening quarter, the West Virginia defense got a big play when Josiah Demoss (St. Marys) flung Elyjah Lieras-Kelly (Marietta) down for a two-yard loss. Kabel Islay (River) would give Ohio a first down with his ten-year run, with 8:57 left in the third. The drive concluded with zero points being scored. The first points of the game came when Demoss was forced to drop low to field the snap on a punt attempt, and his knee hit the turf as he fielded the ball, resulting in a safety, giving Ohio the 2-0 lead with 5:29 left in the opening quarter. Ohio would increase the lead to 9-0 when Finn Bowers (River) raced in from five yards out and Chase Dumolt (New Lexington) added the point after a kick.
At the 9:35 mark of the second quarter, Avery Brown (East Fairmont) hauled in a twelve-yard catch. The drive ended on a one-yard run by Sean Winfrey.Tyler Consolidated). Sam Miller (St. Marys) hit the point after the kick, making this a 9-7 game with 8:00 minutes left in the half. The rest of the half would see three big defensive plays, starting with Channing Lowe (Wirt) sacking Ohio quarterback Sebastian Huck (Fort Frye) for a fourteen-yard loss. Then Kole Searl (Morgan) picked off a West Virginia pass. Turner Garretson (Parkersburg South) would get to Islay for a five-yard loss. The Ohio offense ended the half with a long pass to Kelly that picked up around thirty yards.
Garretson would get to Searl for a four-yard loss with 8:04 left in the third quarter. The Ohio defense would get a fumble recovery from Cole Wright (Trimble) at the 6:49 mark of the quarter. Ohio needed just six yards to get a touchdown, but the West Virginia defense would hold with the big play coming on fourth and two with Bowers being gang tackled at the two-yard line with 4:57 left in the quarter.
With 10:58 left in the game, the ball was tipped once, maybe twice, ending up in Dumolt's hands as the Ohio defense continued their stranglehold on the West Virginia offense. The game had 7:33 seconds left when Brown took in a pass, picking up 49 yards. The drive would end without any points being scored as the Ohio defense once again dodged another bullet. The West Virginia defense stood tall at the 5:10 mark of the final frame, when Lowe got to Islay for a loss of two. Jake Bauman (Parkersburg High School) would make the next big defensive play for West Virginia when he got to Islay for a nine-yard loss with 4:25 left in the game. Winfrey picked up 26 yards on two runs, but Ohio would get a big play from Steven Davis (Galla Academy), and Ohio again dodged another bullet. Bowers iced the game with a powerful ten-yard run to ice the game for Ohio with 0:53 seconds left. West Virginia would not call a timeout, and Ohio was able to take a knee and escape with a two-point win.
