Mount Vernon High School, 2024–Present
What was the first thing you said to the team?
I said to them, We are going to run a first-class program where they are the top priority. They deserve to have a championship team with a championship mindset. We are going to grow boys into men. The number one goal is for our players to be successful after high school. We are going to have a ton of fun!
Will you have an open competition as to who is starting, or will you stay with the returning starters?
Yes. No one is a "returning" starter. We are building this program from the ground up, brick by brick. There is no depth chart at this point. We are pouring our knowledge and teaching into our players to elevate and accelerate Mount Vernon football. This is beginning at the kindergarten level and working its way through the varsity ranks. This is a total reset.
What offense and defense will you run?
The offense will be pro-style with multiple facets.
The defense will be a multiple-front attacking defense.
What will you try to do to get the numbers up for the football team?
Our focus is not to increase numbers. Our focus is to increase quality and increase the amount of engaged learning our young men can have. Organically, numbers will increase over the years.
What are your thoughts about student-athletes playing more than one sport?
Multiple-sport athletes are a must. A continued trend is that our best football players are also our best athletes. Our players must build their bodies athletically and mentally all year.
What will you look for when it comes to scheduling non-league games?
I like to schedule competitive games that allow us to earn playoff points.
As the head coach, what will you do to aid your players in getting the chance to play college football?
We have a coach who is in charge of making sure our players are prepared for college football and recruiting. Our recruiting coach makes individual plans for each player who has the desire to play college football. We steer players in the correct direction depending on their current talent and talent ceiling. Our college recruiting director will formulate a recruiting profile, strengths and weaknesses chart, and goal path to improve on both their strengths and weaknesses. He will also formulate an individual college camp/visit list and make sure our players are properly communicating with college coaches.
What will you do to see that your players are nominated to play in the all-star games at the end of the season?
The proof is in the process. Players get nominated to play in All-Star games and receive end-of-season awards when they have a dominant team. We focus on the team and how each part can help each other accomplish goals. We embrace each other. It is our goal to break team and state records, and in doing so, individuals will be nominated and recognized along the way.
Where should the state finals be?
Centrally located.
What is your biggest memory as a player or a coach as far as sports go?
I do not have just one memory. There are too many to choose from. The memories I have enjoyed the most are taking a group of young men who didn't think of themselves as champions and, through work, perseverance, and toughness, doing things they didn't even think they could do.
This is the tough question. Do you feel that private schools have an unfair advantage over public schools?
No, I do not feel private schools have an unfair advantage.
Have you watched any of the UFL games?
I have not watched the UFL.
Where is the best local spot to grab a good meal?
My wife and I enjoy going to Mazza's in Mount Vernon and The Pub in Apple Valley. They are both independently owned. Both have great food and give back to our sports programs.
What is your favorite sports movie?
Remember the Titans?
Thank You
