What were your personal goals heading into your senior season, and were you able to achieve those goals?
Heading into the season, my goal was to play the revenge game. I wanted to win the IVC (our league), and I wanted to make things personal. Looking back at the season, I would say I accomplished my personal goals. As a small school, we beat a lot of big teams and proved a lot of people wrong. Not only did I get better as a player, but I also got better as a person by learning to fight through adversity.
What are you going to miss the most about playing high school football?
Playing with my friends and just having fun. Even in an intense game, you're doing it with the guys you care the most about.
Who has been the best player you have ever faced in a game, along with the team he played for?
The best player I can recall playing was Nick Petro, who was the quarterback at Sandy Valley High School. As a defensive end, my favorite thing is to hit the QB as hard as possible. It seemed like he could get hit by every guy on the team, but he would still get that ball out and make a play.
In looking back at all of the games you played, who was the best team you played, and why do you believe they were so good?
During my freshman season, we played Dalton. I played the best game I played all season, but I remember learning the most from that game—what defeat really felt like in the playoffs and how hard I had to learn to play. I believe they're the best team I've ever played on because they have a good program and their kids are taught to hit hard; it's all they do, and they do it well.
What mark do you believe your class left on the Malvern football program?
All four years of high school, my class was a big part of the team, even as freshmen. I believe we set the tone for what Malvern football is about. We’re a small school, but we know how to play. Hopefully the younger kids going to high school want to win as badly as we did.
If you are invited to play in an all-star game, will you?
Without a doubt, I know the day will come when I can never play this sport again, so I'm grateful for every chance I get.
Did it feel like your senior season went by faster than previous seasons?
Absolutely. After every game, I knew that the timer was closer and closer to hitting zero for playing high school football.
What were your emotions when you walked off the field after your final high school game?
To be honest, I couldn't comprehend what was happening. I’ve played football since the 1st grade. All my memories of past games started going through my head, and I felt like I couldn't speak.
What was the biggest lesson you learned from playing high school football?
How to fight through adversity—one thing our coach always talked about was adversity. We're a small school that a lot of big schools want to play. How does a team of around 40 kids beat a team with 50+ kids? You fight. Our head coach always made sure we knew other teams looked down on us. But he always made sure we knew how to win.
If you have a chance to catch a Malvern game this year, will you?
Yes, I have a lot of friends that will be a big part of Malvern's success next year, and I am going to make sure I'm there to support and celebrate with them.
What were the best and worst parts of the recruiting process?
When you're getting recruited, you're going to disappoint a lot of people, as well as coaches. In the end, it’s your life and your decision. Coaches will oftentimes pressure you into making a decision even when they know you're still unsure. The best part of recruiting is learning which coaches really studied you and really want you; how do you fit their scheme? How do they want to use you? And do they have a plan for you?
Could you name some of the schools that recruited you?
I talked and had offers from Heidleberg, Otterbein, Westminster, W&J, Hiram, and Baldwin Wallace, and it was the end of the Capital.
What made you choose Capital University?
I knew I wanted to play college football. I just wasn't sure where. When I got in contact with Coach Parsons, he told me he wanted to take a shot at me. He told me how they want to use me and the plans that they have for next season. He told me, “I could sit here and lie to you and tell you we have the best football team in D3 and we're going to win every game next season, or I can give you the plan and blueprints we have for the years to come.” And that's what he did. The level of honesty and determination of him, as well as the rest of the team, is what motivated me to go to Capital University.
Once you are enrolled in college, what will you be majoring in?
Once college starts, I plan to study biochemistry. Science, specifically chemistry, is one of the only things I enjoy learning about and studying. Biochemistry will open a lot of doors and give me a lot of opportunities once I graduate.
What is one food you refuse to eat?
Mushrooms… Nothing needs to be said.
Who is your favorite athlete?
As a Dallas Cowboys fan, Micah Parsons. He's the most versatile player I've seen in my lifetime. You can put that guy anywhere on the defensive line, and he’ll make the play.
