Small school football

Image
As the 2024 football season approaches, I want to say thank you to all of the players, coaches, cheerleaders, band members, officials, and all of the school staff for the good times you are about to give thousands of fans this year. As a fan and a person who covers games, I often get asked why I go to as many smaller school games as I do, and I always tell those asking that there is something special about driving into a small town or village and seeing signs wishing the team well. The crowds might not be as large as the bigger school games, but to a certain extent, they are more into it. I believe that is because almost everyone knows everyone, and it is really a community by itself. The players put their pads on the same as the players at the bigger schools, and they, as with the bigger schools, give it their all as much as they can. The biggest difference some will say is talent; others will say size and speed; but more often than not, at a small school, most of the players ...

Image
Jayden higgins  Zane Trace High School WR and free safety  2026 6ft 170lbs  What are your goals for the 2024 season? I want to have an undefeated season and go deep into the playoffs.  As I watched your hud package, I was impressed by the way you are willing to block when the ball is not coming your way. Is there a college or pro receiver that you molded that part of your game from? I wouldn't say that I molded it from any college or pro receiver; it just comes naturally to me. Also, from your HUD package, you seem to enjoy playing on special teams; how difficult is it to give 100% on that part of your game? It isn't difficult for me because in the middle of the game, my adrenaline is pumping, so it's pedaling to the medal the whole time. Football, soccer, or track: how long have you been in each sport? I have played football and soccer since I was 5, and I just started track in 7th grade. How did your track and soccer seasons go? They both went ...

The most important thing that I am learning is that there will always be people willing to compete, so you have to outwork everyone who comes your way. What is the toughest part of practice? The OVAC All Star games ends in a 13-13 tie for the first time

Image
Yesterday I made the almost two-hour drive to Wheeling, West Virginia, to take in the 78th Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Annual Rudy Mumley All-Star Game, which pits Ohio vs. West Virginia. The game always seems more like a playoff game than an All-Star game, which at times can get a little chippie. Ohio would score with 9:20 left in the opening quarter when Kabel Islay (River) found a wide-open Cole Thoburn (St. Clairsville) for a 34-yard touchdown. Jacob Meager just made his kick to put Ohio up 7-0. Thoburn would have made Randy Moss happy with his route running and sweet little move to lose the player attempting to guard him. With 6:00 left, the clock Jason Castello (Barnesville) picked off a pass thrown by Luke Hudson (University). The West Virginia defense used a nice play from Corey Lyons (Weir), who stopped Sabron Felton (Steubenville) after a catch for a 4-yard loss to quickly end the Ohio drive. Lyons would use some nice work from the big boys up front to pick up 22...

As a captain, it's my job to motivate and lead my team to greatness. If I drag my ass around being lazy, they will do the same. If I am going to lead, I'm going to lead by example, so I hold myself accountable on and off the field. Which teammate is most likely to do something to get a laugh when things are a little tense?
